An illustrated map is a great tool for communicating complex information in a visually engaging and fun way. Examples include: introducing customers to a new business location, promoting a festival or special event, connecting a group of businesses to new clients, or guiding clients around a complex exhibition or campus. I work with clients to first carefully understand what information is key, then create a map and design layout that fits the unique needs of the project and location. Some things to consider before commissioning a map:
- what geographical area needs to be mapped,
- what are the key landmarks or locations to show, for both interest and navigation,
- what elements of the business brand identity are important to consider,
- what will the final map illustration be seen on: eg. will it be a printed leaflet, a website resource, or for signage, or multiple sized items.
- ideal timeline and budget,
- licensing usage – will this be used for marketing, merchandise, what format and duration.
